District of Sechelt Official Community Plan (OCP) Review

The District of Sechelt has been reviewing and revising its Official Community Plan (OCP) over the last eighteen months. An OCP is one of the most important documents for a municipality, providing broad goals, objectives and detailed policies to manage and direct land use, the environment, housing, economic development, transportation and infrastructure, parks and community services. The current OCP is now 15 years old, and Sechelt needs an updated plan to direct the future land use and development in the community, consistent with the principles of the 2007 Vision Plan, changing socio economic conditions, and new senior government policies. Council's consultant has been working closely over the past 18 months with an OCP Advisory Committee, staff and Council to review issues and provide direction on draft policies.

What is the process for adopting the OCP?

The draft OCP has been revised based on public and Council input. The OCP is now a bylaw (Bylaw 492), and will go through the formal adoption process. Bylaw 492 will be considered at the Committee of the Whole on June 9, 2010 and be given first reading at a subsequent Council meeting. The bylaw will then be sent to referral agencies for comment. Council will give second reading to the OCP once comments from referral agencies are received. Amendments may be made at second reading if necessary. A public hearing will then be scheduled for July 2010. After public hearing Council will either give the bylaw 3rd reading and adopt the bylaw, or make further amendments to the bylaw.

What changes were made to the OCP?
